This is some Friday inspiration which we have seen doing the arounds from the Environmental Paper Network… Circularity and Reuse…. It’s not all about Recycling! How do we drive more reuse and remanufacture and build the systems to support this?
When it comes to circularity of products and design, our minds spring immediately to recycling. We all believe that using more recyclable materials is a good thing. And it is. But we believe it is equally, if not more important to consider the reuse and repurpose of products.
- According to SKF, the remanufacture of a bearing uses 10% of the energy it needed when it was first produced.
- According to Environmental Paper Network, from 2012 to 2020, annual paper packaging waste in the EU rose 10kg per person, reaching 73kg of paper packaging waste per person in the EU
- And let’s not forget about the humble glass milk bottle of our childhood and how that was reused up to 25 times before ultimately being recycled into another milk bottle!
In today’s society we need to consider the systems to enable the reuse for manufacturers and consumers alike and to help break the single use mentality we have found ourselves in.
